RAISING AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE
DURING COVID-19

SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN BY BEKAH REDWINE AND GABBY PINO

OUR MESSAGE

Our organization knows the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to stay home. But for thousands of people across the country, staying home means being isolated with their abuser. Our goal is to raise awareness of the dangers of domestic violence during isolation and provide resources to victims who may be struggling. Through our #UnsafeAtHome campaign, we hope to create a safe space for victims to share their stories and rally support from other organizations hoping to do the same.

AUDIENCE

The resources of our campaign are targeted towards victims of domestic violence, especially during the era of COVID-19. Our secondary audience is similar organizations looking to sign onto our movement. There is strength in numbers, and to make sure we reach as many victims as possible, we need the full force of the domestic violence prevention movement behind us. Find our social media toolkit and sign onto our pledge below!

MODES OF ENGAGEMENT

Beginning May 4th, we are launching a weeklong campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence in isolation. Every day we'll be posting new content with resources for victims and data about this epidemic. All the organizations signed onto our pledge will participate in a Twitter storm on May 6th at 2pm EST. This method of mass amounts of posting at a concentrated time is known to increase the likelihood of a hashtag trending.

All of this will lead up to our Facebook Livestream panel on May 8th. The panel will feature experts on domestic violence and survivors themselves. People can tune in to ask questions about the panelists' experience or get help with their own struggles.

METHODS OF OUTREACH

Domestic violence victims are commonly between the ages of 18-40. To reach this wide audience, we'll be utilizing three platforms:

  • Twitter's viral nature allows our message to be spread farther than our established base

  • Facebook reaches older audiences and is the most effective platform for hosting virtual events

  • Instagram accesses younger audiences

GOALS

Our goal is to reach as many victims of domestic violence as possible. We want to make our resources as accessible as possible for those struggling. If we help just one victim escape their abuser, this campaign will have been a success.

METRICS

Engagement in our campaign will be measured in 3 ways:

  • The number of tweets using #UnsafeAtHome

  • The number of individual attendees to our #UnsafeAtHome panel

  • The number of organizations who signed onto our pledge and participated in our campaign efforts
